Navigating the Challenges of Statutory Supervisor Training

Statutory supervisor training, particularly the eligibility exam, presents significant challenges for many aspiring supervisors. The exam, which is crucial for demonstrating proficiency in relevant legislation, consists of WHS and task appointed questions to be completed within a three-hour timeframe. Unfortunately, a notable number of clients struggle to manage this time effectively, often unable to answer all the questions within the allotted period.

The pass rates indicated to AME from valued clients in these exams highlight a critical gap in the training that clients receive. It underscores the need for more targeted, effective training solutions that not only cover the necessary material but also equip supervisors with strategies to efficiently navigate the structure of the exam.

At AME, we are committed to addressing these challenges by enhancing our training methods to better prepare our clients for success.

Addressing the Reluctance of Some Leading Hands to Become Statutory Alternates

Leading Hands and Alternates often hesitate to enrol in supervisor training programs, a reluctance that poses significant future challenges for Mine Operator’s operational structure. Many express concerns that the training is too difficult, fear being educationally exposed, or feel unmotivated by the lack of incentives for additional responsibilities. This hesitancy is further compounded by the fact that many other training providers fail to deliver the two units of competency with specific reference to mining activities, often running courses through contractors not directly involved in the mining sector.

At AME, we recognise these concerns and are committed to making our training programs more accessible and relevant. We ensure that our courses are not only tailored to the unique needs of the mining industry but also facilitated by instructors with direct mining experience. By addressing the specific concerns and contexts of our clients, we aim to encourage more Leading Hands and Alternates to step forward, enhancing their readiness and confidence to take on statutory supervisory appointed positions.

Exam Preparation: Tailored for Success

Understanding the complex structure of WHS legislation is pivotal for passing the statutory supervisor eligibility exam. To address this, AME offers an 8-hour focused learning course designed specifically to familiarise learners with the structure and requirements of the legislation. Additionally, AME will provide the learners hard copies of the WHS ACT and WHS Mines Regulations for marking up priority subject matter empowering learners to efficiently manage their time and complete the exam within the allotted three hours.

This training is available as a stand-alone course for clients who have already completed the required two WHS units of competency, or it can be integrated into a broader training package. Recognising the needs of our clients, we provide this course with the flexibility of both onsite and off-site learning support, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all participants.

Furthermore, we engage tier 1 miners in this training, ensuring that the course content is relevant, up-to-date, and aligned with the highest industry standards.
